The Silent MPs
While the role of Members of Parliament is to defend the electorate’s rights and make legislation, a new report has shown that 31 lawmakers from the National Assembly and three from the Senate did not make any contributions on the floor of their respective Houses in 2020.
According to Mzalendo Trust, an organisation that tracks the performance of MPs, some of the 34 silent legislators are very vocal outside Parliament.
They include Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and his Kisumu counterpart, Fred Outa, MPs George Aladwa (Madakara), Imran Okoth (Kibra), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret) Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango), and Gideon Konchellah (Kilgoris).
Others are Kajiado Senator Philip Mpaayei, Nominated Senator Victor Prengei, Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache), George Kariuki (Ndia), Mathias Robi (Kuria West), Charles Gimose (Hamisi) and Abdi Shurie (Balambala).
DP Ruto Cautions Against Tribal Coalitions
Deputy President William Ruto has criticised politicians who are forming tribal alliances, saying Kenyans are wiser today and will reject such.
The DP said leaders should instead come up with solutions to address the challenges Kenyans are going through.
He claimed that he was the only leader with a vision in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
BBI Appeal Case to Begin Tomorrow
The lawyers of various parties that have appealed against a High Court ruling that shot down the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) are burning the midnight oil ahead of tomorrow when the case begins at the Court of Appeal.
Court of Appeal president Daniel Musinga will chair a seven-judge panel that he appointed to hear the suit.
But before the proceedings begin on Tuesday, the Appellate Court is today expected to make two rulings on the same matter.
In one of the duo cases, Attorney-General Paul Kihara Kariuki wants the court to throw out city lawyer Charles Kanjama’s BBI appeal while in the other suit Professors Charles Manga and Migai Aketch are seeking to be enjoined as friends of the court.
New Knut SG Accuses Sossion of Poor Leadership
The newly elected Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), Collins Oyuu, has promised to rebuild the once-giant labour movement.
Oyuu alleged that his predecessor, Nominated MP Wilson Sossion, had brought down the union as a result of his chest-thumping style of leadership.
“The teams were two – Team Status Quo and Team Change. Team Status Quo was being led by Sossion and they are now ‘orphaned’ and I am the father of Team Change,” he said.
Muturi Tells Kenyans to Vote Wisely in Next Year’s Elections
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has cautioned Kenyans against electing leaders with questionable integrity in the 2022 General Election.
Speaking in Thika, Muturi, who was recently installed as the Mt Kenya region spokesperson, advised the voters to correct their previous mistakes by electing visionary representatives, or otherwise they would suffer for another five years.
Officers Record Song to Express Frustrations
Barely a week after Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai banned police officers from using social media to air their grievances, a uniformed woman and man have taken their frustrations online.
The duo have released a song to lament how junior officers are being mistreated by their seniors.
National Police Service Commission chair Eliud Kinuthia asked Mutyambai to take stern action against the two officers, saying activism is not allowed in the service.
Governors Cancel Plan to Shut Down Counties
Governors have abandoned their earlier plan to paralyse operations in counties due to lack of funds.
The threat was shelved after the leadership of the Council of Governors (CoG) met with Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani.
CoG chair said Yatani promised to disburse all the funds the Treasury owes counties before 30th June.
Mandera Gets First Female Chief
Leila Kullow has made history after being picked as the first female chief in Mandera County.
Central Division Assistant Deputy County Commissioner Jeremiah Wangilla said Kullow was selected as the new assistant chief of Komor Location after going through a competitive interview.
Wangilla said the era of discriminating women was long gone, as they are equal to the leadership task just like men.
Former Rift Valley Governors Plot Comeback
A good number of former Rift Valley region governors who were defeated in 2017 have intensified political activities ahead of the 2022 General Election.
Simon Kachapin (West Pokot), Benjamin Cheboi (Baringo), Cleophas Lagat (Nandi), and Isaac Ruto (Bomet) have been recruiting young energetic people to mobilise their supporters, as they prepare to attempts to unseat those who floored them.
Ruto was defeated by the late Joyce Laboso while Lagat was unseated by Stephen Sang. Kachapin lost to Prof John Lonyangapuo while Stanley Kiptis carried the day in Baringo.
