Malkia Strikers, Kenya Volleyballers, Lose to Hosts Japan in Olympics Opener

The Kenya national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, kicked off their Tokyo Olympics campaign with a 3-0 set defeat to hosts Japan on Sunday, 25th July, at Ariake Arena.

The Malkia Strikers went down 25-15 in the first set before another defeat, 25-11 in the second set.

In the third set, there was intense competition as Kenya dominated the game but still lost to Japan on 25-23.

Malkia Strikers are in the same group as South Korea, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil.

Kenya’s second match will be against South Korea on Tuesday, 27th July.

Meanwhile, Kenyan boxers Nick ‘Commander’ Okoth and Christine Ongare have been eliminated from the Olympics Games.

Okoth lost to Mongolian Tsendbaater Erdenebat in a round of 32 bouts at the Kokugikan Arena on Saturday, 24th July.
The Mongolian won by a split decision of 3-2, after winning the first and the third sets 3-2, while Okoth edged him in the second round, also 3-2.

Filipino boxer Irish Magno advanced to the Round of 16 in the women’s flyweight boxing on Sunday, 25th July, after her 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, and 30-26 unanimous win over Kenya’s Ongare.

The exit of the two leaves Kenya with boxers Elly Ajowi and Elizabeth Akinyi in the hunt for the gold medals.
