Harun Aydin: Terror Link Claim on Turk in DP Ruto’s Blocked Uganda Trip

A Turkish businessman has become the subject of conversation following Deputy President William Ruto’s failed visit to Uganda on Monday, 3rd July.

Although the differences between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy had been cited in the standoff, the Daily Nation reported that the presence of Harun Aydin might have raised the red flag.

The story indicated that Aydin has made numerous trips to Kenya since 2018 for unclear business.

State-allied bloggers would increase more interest in this man after going to the archives and retrieving an old story in which he was linked to terrorism.

The New York Times published in 2001 that the Turk had been arrested by German authorities on suspicion of being in possession of explosive devices that were concealed in luggage. It’s not clear whether he was cleared or not.

But allies of DP Ruto have jumped onto the defence of Aydin, saying that he is a “clean” business.

Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, who was part of the DP’s entourage to Uganda, accused the Daily Nation and government bloggers of spreading cheap propaganda.

According to the controversial lawmaker, the businessman has an interest in fruit farming.

“I woke up to the shocking news spread by gutter press Daily Nation and idle blogger like Robert Alai spreading malicious stories about businessman Harun Aydin.

“Harun is a Turkish investor interested in modern fruit farming and not a terrorist, as alleged. If anyone is in doubt about the details of Harun, then they can visit the Turkish embassy(in Nairobi) for more information,” he said.

Sudi added the Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni does not deal with criminals.

“To the doubting Thomases, Museveni is not a kid to deal with someone of questionable repute. You can use your diplomatic connection to enquire from Ssebo (Museveni) himself the kind of interest that the businessman has in Uganda,” the MP said.

It still remains unclear the kind of activities DP Ruto and his allies are engaged in in the neighbouring countries.

Those who were to travel with the DP besides Sudi, are Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, his Kinango counterpart, Benjamin Tayari, businessmen David Lagat and Erick Rohoh as well as Aydin, who was the only foreigner.
