The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the killing of a man at Tushauriane stage in Nairobi’s Kayole Estate.

In a statement on Friday, 20th August IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori said the investigations will seek to establish whether the death falls within the authority’s mandate of holding police accountable for their actions.

They will also seek to establish whether the deceased succumbed to injuries allegedly caused by police during curfew hours.

“Pursuant to Section 25 of IPOA Act which requires that deaths that result from police action or are caused by members of the National Police Service while on duty be investigated, the Authority launched investigations into the death,” said Makori.

Makori further stated that the authority will take the appropriate action should the officers involved be found culpable.

“Upon conclusion, if culpability will be found, IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to the relevant State agencies and also upraise the public on its findings,” she said.

The 38-year-old John Kiiru was allegedly ambushed and beaten to death for violating the 10 pm-4 am curfew.

His body was found on Thursday morning, 19th August prompting protests and running battles between protesters and the police in Kayole.

The incident comes barely three weeks after police enforcing the curfew allegedly killed two brothers in Embu.

Benson Njiru, 22, and his brother, Emmanuel Mutura, 19, were arrested for allegedly flouting the 10 pm-4 am curfew on Sunday, 1st August , outside their family shop in Kianjokoma shopping centre.

The two siblings lost their lives at the hands of police officers from Manyatta Police Station in Embu County.
