Former boxer Conjestina Achieng has this morning torched her house in Gem, Siaya county, on fire.

Media reports indicate that she set the house on fire over frustrations.

Since 2011, the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion has been suffering from a mental illness.

It was her who first brought the matter to light after Conjestina withdrew her son from school and set ablaze her boxing gear.

She was admitted to various health facilities, including Mathira Hospital, which deals with mental cases.

Over the years, well-wishers have tried to take her to rehabilitation centres, with little improvement on her health.

Two years ago, she had been booked at Eden House Rehabilitation Centre, but failed to complete the sessions.

“The progress was very good until she left. But you know she has been with us for a long time. We keep people for about three months in the first session then we admit them to the next stage, which is basically the reintegration phase where they can work or go back to school.

“By this stage, one has stabilised. Conjestina asked to leave, and because this is a reintegration phase, we obliged,” the facility’s Executive Director Boniface Ndiragu said.

Unfortunately, a few weeks later she went into her former life of drinking illicit brews.
