Now, the crisis in Laikipia is getting out of hand, with the evil of banditry becoming the order of the day.
Despite the State imposing a 6 pm to 6 am curfew and deploying officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), Administrative Police (AP), and regular police, bandits have stepped up their attacks, raising questions about the effectiveness of what Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i described as a “serious security operation”.
A video of an elderly woman crying out after her house was set on fire this week by the rustlers has received emotional reactions on social media.
The traumatised woman, looking at the debris, asked painful questions that she hopes the government will answer.
In her wailing voice, the widow blamed President Uhuru Kenyatta for failing to protect his people.
“Where is Uhuru? Why have you abandoned your people? What mistake did we do to deserve this? she tearfully posed.
She explained the bandits we only targeting farms and houses owned by members of the Kikuyu community.
“We have title deeds for this land, but bandits are grazing here and torching our houses. We are very hardworking, but now we have been reduced to beggars and IDPs. Uhuru, we need your urgent intervention,” she said.
She added that the skirmishes have separated her from her children, who have fled to unknown places.
In addition, the woman said that she was displaced from Kuresoi, Nakuru county, years ago due to tribal clashes and now a similar predicament is facing her.
Several well-wishers have pledged to buy her a piece of land in a safer place and build her a house.
More Attacks
At midnight hours today, September 10, at least eight houses were reduced ashes by the bandits in the Ol-Moran area.
So bad is the situation that when Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya visited the place three days, barely two kilometers from where he was the attackers were unleashing terror on residents.
Although he has now recanted, Natembeya revealed that the bandits were using M16s and other heavy rifles, which Kenyan officers did not have.
The bandits, who are from Baringo and West Pokot counties, are said to be acquainted with the terrain more than the police.
Allies of Deputy President William Ruto are now asking President Uhuru Kenyatta to send Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers in the area, as apparently, other police units are unable to do the job.
