A video of a man in Kakamega county intriguingly cooking ugali has gone viral on social media.

Ugali is a common dish in many homes in Kenya and although how it is made varies a little from one community to the other, at least there is a standard way of cooking it.

But this man did it in a totally different manner.

After the water boiled, he put several cups of flour in it.

But instead of taking a cooking stick, popularly known as mwiko to mix, there was a machine to do that.

The mixer was connected to electricity and within three minutes the ugali was ready.

Ordinary, it takes 10 to 15 minutes for ugali to be ready.

Netizens have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the innovation and a majority saying they cannot embrace it until they taste a piece of ugali made by the mixer.

Here are some of the reactions:

Ali Maalim: “People have tried to cook ugali using the modern means but it never works. The best ugali is the one cooked with firewood.”

Eric Eric: “Maybe better designed to cook dogs’ food. Ugali takes 10 to 15 minutes and the machine only takes three minutes.”

Laban Njuguna: “A machine that spins ugali? What’s wrong with you people? Only fire can cook.”

Isaac Malemo: “The engineers are bringing sports in food. We shall not allow these sports in front of work. Ugali must be cooked using a wooden rod and not machines.

Osoro Faith: “Can machine can only mix cement and sand not ugali.”

Mumelo Gilbert: “Even our ancestors will not accept technology to alter the DNA of our most beloved food.”

Prit-Pal Simba: “Stop insulting engineers when someone is just lazy. Wooden mwiko is the ingredient of a tasty ugali.”
