The bulldog spirit by ODM leader Raila Odinga to win over the Mt Kenya region has seen him chase down support from politicians, business leaders, elders, and now freedom fighters.

This evening, the former Prime Minister was at the home of famous freedom fighter the late Dedan Kimathi’s widow Mukami Kimathi in Nairobi.

Mukami, who is a heroine in Kenya’s freedom struggle against British colonial rule, reportedly blessed the AU Special Envoy for the presidency.

Raila knelt before her to receive the blessings. She placed her hands on the opposition leader’s head and made a prayer.

There was a small ceremony for the favours before Raila interacted with members of the Kimathi family.

The photos have sparked a debate on social media, with some expressing joy and others laughing off.

Critics argued traditionally Kikuyu women do not bless any man, especially when he is kneeling.

Reactions:

Alex Muraguri: “The 5th Raila Odinga receives blessings from freedom fighter’s wife Mukami Kimathi. All Kenyans are happy.”

Gashoni Ndegwa: “Mukami Kimathi has blessed baba Raila Odinga as the next President of Kenya. We are Kenyans and Kenya is our business.”

Ann Mhoro: “She blessed him on behalf of her family, not Kikuyus. Leadership comes from God.”

Irene Ngaruiya: “Does Raila know Kikuyu women don’t bless men? Anyway, in 2022 we are sending you to Bondo.”

Eliud Njue: “Even in the Bible women don’t bless. Mzee Raila is clueless on so many things.”

Evahlyne Kamau: “May he receive the blessings. Anyone can bless anyone.”

Moses Gitau: “That’s nothing, Raila will try everything, but all in vain.”

Susan Gikonyo: “She is very old. I even suspect she doesn’t know what she is doing.”
