Kenyan top sought meme lord Kariuki Kamau popularly known as Karis Memes has garnered huge social media fan bases since starting his creative journey in 2015.
In a recent interview with a local media house, Karis pointed out that he aimed to brighten the days of his followers on various social media platforms, but it translated into a lucrative business after becoming one of the top social media influencers in Kenya.
“I did not intend to gain anything, it was just for fun. I realised there was a lot of engagement on memes. Once you can capture people’s attention, you can capitalise on it,” he said.
Karis opened up about some of the companies he has worked with since the start of his meme creation journey. His first gig was with Deacon East Africa Group where he was selected for marketing promotion. He has since worked with big companies like Airtel, Coca-Cola, and Multichoice.
The meme lord confessed that the journey has not been very smooth as it’s an uphill task to always keep the audience glued on your social media page. For this reason, he says he has to post at least thrice a day.
“I have to post at least thrice a day, no matter how busy I am. To be successful in social media, you have to be consistent.”
“It doesn’t feel good at all, as someone who is supposed to make people happy. You may think it is funny, but after posting, there are no comments, likes. You decide to pull it down,” Karis says.
Karis is a father of one and works at a government parastatal. He says that his parents are number one fans which made them appreciate social media.
