If ODM leader Raila Odinga succeeds in convincing the Mt Kenya region to vote for him as President, media mogul SK Macharia will take a lot of credit.
The wealthy businessman is using his media expertise to market the former Prime Minister in the vote-rich bloc.
Instead of the usual rallies where politicians address the crowds and leave, Macharia has added a new flavour in Raila’s campaigns.
When Raila visited Nyandarua County today, September 6, it was more his engagements were more of concerts than rallies.
Through his Inooro TV, which is under Royal Media Services, the media investor had sought services of crème de la crème of the musicians from Mt Kenya.
Some of the artistes present included Ben Githae, Jose Gaturura, Sarafina Salim, Sir James, and Regina Muthoga.
In every stopover the former Premier made, the singers would entertain the locals and set the mood before Raila took the microphone.
“Do you love Inooro? Today we have brought you Mugithi and a message from baba,” Macharia said.
The media mogul is perhaps the only tycoon who has stood with the opposition through thick and thin.
He used his resources to support the AU Special Envoy in 2007, 2013, and 2017 General Elections.
Even when his fellow billionaires pushed him to back Mwai Kibaki in 2007 and President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017, Macharia did not abandon Raila.
At times, he has paid a heavy price for backing the ex-Premier publicly.
In 2013, advertisers withdrew their commercial from Inooro FM, which broadcasts in Kikuyu, to show they were not happy with his political choice. The same happened again in 2017 when he told a committee of the National Assembly that Raila won the 2007 presidential election.
However, his business stands on a solid foundation, as he always bounces within weeks.
