Kenya’s Albert Korir and Peres Jepchirchir are the winners of the 50th edition of the New York City Marathon held on Sunday, 7th November.

Jepchirchir held off Cheptoo to win by four seconds in a time of 2:22:39. Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh finished third in 2:22:52.

Molly Seidel finished fourth, improving her PB to 2:24:42, while Namibia’s world bronze medallist Helalia Johannes was fifth in 2:26:09 and the USA’s Kellyn Taylor sixth in 2:26:10.

“It was my great honour to be the winner of the New York City Marathon, the only champion of the Olympics to win the New York City Marathon,” Jepchirchir was quoted as saying by the World Athletics official website.

“It was a great opportunity for me and it was my plan. My preparation was short, but I tried my best.”

Korir won the men’s race with a time of 2:08:22. Mohamed Reda El Aaraby of Morocco came in second ( 2:08:06) while Eyob Faniel of Italy finished third in 2:08:52.

“I didn’t imagine that I would win today but it wasn’t just a result of today, it began three months before, when I knew that I would be part of the New York City Marathon. After all of my training, this is the result,” said Korir.

Kibet clocked a PB of 2:11:15 for fourth, as Kandie faded to finish ninth. Nageeye was fifth in 2:11:39 and Bekele, back racing just six weeks after his third-place finish in Berlin, was sixth in 2:12:52.
