Egerton University Lecturers Strike, Students Stranded

Learning and other principal activities were yesterday disrupted at Egerton University in Njoro after lecturers and workers took to the streets to raise their concern over unpaid salaries.

The ongoing exams were canceled since the lecturers were not available for submission and supervision of the Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) supposed to be done by the students.

The staff called a meeting at the University’s graduation square outside the administration block as a move to seek an audience with the management over their delayed income.

Kenya University Staff Union Branch chairperson Kipchumba Ruto declared that they were not ready to offer services until the management responds to the grievances tabled before them.

“We served the management with a notice of withdrawing our services if they won’t have complied by today. We have heard nothing from them yet,” said Kipchumba.

University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) chairperson Prof Mwaniki Ngari pointed fingers at the university’s management for dishonoring the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) which was accepted nationwide.

“Whatever we are demanding for is not unique to Egerton. It is what is provided for under the 2017-2021 CBA which was registered in court in January for all public universities,” said Prof Mwaniki.

Prof Mwaniki further revealed that this was not the first time the university is dishonoring work agreements. He stated that they had agreed on the return to work formula which entailed a 40 percent pay cut, but the university failed to heed the agreement.

On the other hand, Egerton University Vice-Chancellor Prof Isaac Kibwage disputed the claims by the staff that the management had discredited work agreements, and they were not properly compensated.

“The staff are demanding money that the university doesn’t have. It is a CBA that was signed nationally, and the government has not given sufficient capitation to cater for it,” said Kibwage.
