The Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) Francis Atwoli has lauded the Ministry of Sports’ decision to disband the Football Kenya Federation.

In a statement issued on Saturday, 13th the Cotu boss said that the decision had been long overdue and one which will entrench discipline in the administration of football.

“For a long time, FKF has been a thorn in the flesh of Kenyan football considering they have been engaging in unnecessary politics and fights with not only the players and government but also other key actors in the football sector in Kenya,” read the statement in part.

Atwoli said that Kenya’s national team Harambee Stars has been performing poorly in recent years due to the poor leadership and mismanagement of funds at FKF.

“It was only right for the government to intervene. As a county, we need to regain our lost glory as the champions of East Africa and this calls for the government, through the Ministry of Sports, to be bold and assertive as indeed the Minister has been,” Atwoli said.

Sports CS Amina Mohamed on Thursday, 11th November disbanded FKF led by its boss Nick Mwendwa and appointed a 15-member caretaker committee chaired by retired Justice Aaron Ringera to run Kenyan soccer for the next six months.

FKF was dissolved after CS Amina received a report on a serious fraud investigation reported to police officers.

The move saw FKF boss Nwendwa arrested on Friday evening, 12th November, and taken to DCI headquarters for grilling.
