Some allies of Deputy President William Ruto found themselves in trouble after they were heckled in Nyeri town on Sunday.
Senators Kipchumba Murkomen of Elgeyo-Marakwet and Kericho’s Aaron Cheruiyot, as well as MPs Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango) and Didmus Barasa (Kimilili), had visited the area to popularise the DP’s presidential candidates.
However, supporters of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga jereed them until they gave up.
‘Handshake’ followers chanted Uhuru and Ruto’s names even as Murkomen tried to tell off the hecklers.
“Raila! Raila! Uhuru! Uhuru…,” they shouted
On the other hand, those supporting the DP attempted to pin down the pro-Handshake group, creating a shouting match.
“Ruto! Ruto! UDA! UDA!” they chanted.
The Elgeyo-Marakwet lawmaker, whose voice could be barely heard, claimed that some opponents of the second in command paid the youth to shout him and his team down.
“You have tried, next time you can do better,” he said.
Eventually, they were forced to leave the town before passing their ‘hustler’ message.
Dr. Ruto was in the neighboring Murang’a County launching Kangari United Dairy Cooperative Society.
The Nyeri incident came days after the Deputy President’s entourage was pelted with stones in Kondele, Kisumu County.
The country’s number accused ODM leader Raila Odinga of sponsoring goons to disrupt his rallies in the Luo Nyanza region.
The police, however, cleared the former Prime Minister, saying that organisers of the DP’s visit in Kondele were at fault after they clashed over “campaign logistic funds”.
Raila also distanced from the violence, stating that every presidential candidate has the right to tour any part of the country and sell their agenda.
