Michael Olunga Wins Top Scorer Award in Asian Champions League

Kenyan international and Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is the 2021 Asian Champions League top goal scorer.

Despite his side Al Duhail being eliminated in the group stages, Olunga won the golden boot after bagging nine goals in the tournament which concluded on Tuesday night, 23rd November.

The 27-year-old topped the goal scorer’s chart with one goal ahead of Brazilian Gustavo from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors who was followed closely by teammate Modou Barrow from Gambia, with six goals.

Olunga scored in each of the six games that Duhail played. He scored in the 2-0 opening day victory against Al Shorta, netted the solo goal against Saudi giants Al Ahli who equalized in the 93rd minute and hit a hattrick against Esteghlal including an 85th minute winner in a 4-3 victory.

He once again netted twice in the return 2-2 draw with Iranian side Esteghlal, netted the equalizer in the 2-1 loss to Al Shorta as well as the solo strike in the 1-1 draw with Ahli.

Al Duhail who finished second in Group C missed out on a ticket to the next round of the tournament.

Al Hilal won the Asian Champions League title after beating Pohang Steelers 2-0 in the final played at King Fahd International Stadium.
