Ford-Kenya deputy party leader and Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka has joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Onyonka was officially received by ODM party leader Raila Odinga on Thursday, 25th November at Chungwa House, Nairobi.

Onyonka was among other Kisii region political leaders including former legislators Simon Ogari, Dr Robert Monda and UDA’s youth leaders who dumped their parties in favour of Raila’s led party.

“PL @RailaOdinga today received into the party defectors from Kisii County who ditched their respective parties for ODM. They were led by MP @MrOnyonka, former legislators Simon Ogari and Dr Monda. Over 50 political leaders including UDA youth leaders joined the Movement,” ODM said in a tweet.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, 22nd November Onyonka said that he relinquished his post in the Moses Wetangula-led party during the 4th November National Delegates Conference (NDC) held at the Bomas of Kenya.

Onyonka noted that he believes in voting for ODM Leader Raila Odinga for presidency come 2022.

“I am no longer the party leader. I actually relinquished my position two weeks ago when Ford Kenya had its NDC. I couldn’t stay in FORD-Kenya when I believe in voting for Raila. On principle I walked out,” he explained.

Onyonka’s defection comes at a time when the country is experiencing political realignments ahead of the 2022 General Election.

Over the past few weeks, several leaders have shifted political parties. Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s detection to Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) from the ruling Jubilee Party is one of the major switches witnessed in the country.

Waiguru is seeking to defend her gubernatorial seat will face stiff competition from the county’s Woman Representative Purity Ngirici, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua among others.
