Gambia’s Incumbent President Adama Barrow has been declared winner of the country’s presidential election held on Saturday, 4th December.
According to the results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Sunday, 5th December, the 56-year-old garnered 53.2 per cent of the vote. His main challenger Ousainou Darboe had 27.7 per cent.
Borrow who was contesting on the National People’s Party (NPP) got 457,519 votes against Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP), who garnered 238,253 votes.
Other contenders were Halifa Sallah of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), Abdoulie Jammeh of the National Unity Party (NUP), Mama Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) and Essa Faal, an independent candidate.
“Having received 457, 519 votes in the election, I hereby declare Adama Barrow duly elected to serve as president of The Gambia,” Alieu Momar Njai, the IEC chairman announced on Sunday.
President Barrow who will be serving for the second five-year term took over from long-time dictator Yahya Jammeh in 2016 after being in power for 22 years.
Mr Jammeh was sent to exile in Equatorial Guinea following his failure to accept Mr Barrow’s election victory.
