A Mombasa-based police officer stationed at Changamwe with the rank of a Police Constable has taken his own life after writing an emotional suicide note.
His body was found jutting from the roof of his house with his clothes aptly arranged in one corner of the room.
According to the note, the officer stated that he decided to put an end to his life on Thursday, December 9, after failing to clear some debts that had pushed him beyond his limits.
Further, he disclosed that he had a debt totaling Ksh81,000 which he had acquired from various individuals including one of his bosses at the National Police Service (NPS). He added that the debt range from Ksh1000 to Ksh50,000 while directing his colleagues to take to social media and conduct a fundraiser that will see the debts cleared before or during his funeral.
“I request that you may form a WhatsApp group for a fundraiser. Out of that contribution, kindly submit Ksh24,000 to Sergeant Maina,” the note read in part.
The officer further instructed his fellow officers not to investigate his death but only make arrangements that will see his body moved to his home.
“Just pick me and send me home,” he noted with a special message to his family including his four children assuring them that he cherished them so much.
“I love you, but I was not able to say goodbye, we will meet one day. Work hard in school.”
Following this development, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko stepped in to clear Ksh17,000 and Ksh50,000 debts. He further stated that he was ready to help the family cater for funeral expenses.
“I shall also be willing to give a coffin and hearse to transport the body of the late officer to its final resting place if the family and Changamwe OCS accept my offer so that all the funeral funds that will be raised through WhatsApp groups and other forums go directly to help the family in other important issues like paying for school fees,” Sonko stated.
Sadly, this comes only a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta advised police officers to ensure proper mental health by seeking solutions from experts deployed by the Government. This was after an incident in Kabete, where an officer sprayed bullets at five members of the public before killing himself.
