The Kisumu County Government in the latest move has banned vehicles from accessing the Kisumu Central Business District (CBD) to mark a Car Free Day on Saturday, December 11.

The action will see zero motorcycles and motor vehicles in the third-largest city that aims to convert to a non-motorized city following the redesigning to remove parking lots and create walkways to promote human traffic.

Kisumu City Manager, Abala Wanga, stated that the directive had been issued earlier, and the motorists had been advised to seek alternative ways to access the CBD.

“The Kisumu City management has embarked on sensitizing the public on different uses of the streets,” Wanga told a local publication.

“All public service vehicles will not be allowed in the CBD during those hours and the designated days.”

This program was launched in Kisumu under a partnership with the County Government, United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) to decongest traffic problems and promote environmental conservation.

World Car Free Day is marked every year on September 22, and people are encouraged to use other means of transport such as cycling, skating, and walking on that day.

According to the UN-Habitat, which has been advocating for the implementation of the program, car-free days also aid in promoting healthy living since people get a chance to do various exercises such as walking and cycling which is good for the general health of their bodies.

Currently, in Africa, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Rwanda have adopted monthly car-free days, and it is marked monthly.
