Learners under the Competency Base Curriculum (CBC) are barred from transferring schools once they transit to grade 6.
According to Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the students will only be allowed to transfer schools between grade 1 and grade 5, but upon reaching grade 4 or 5, the transfer process takes a new twist as they will have to visit the education sub-county directors for approval of transfers.
Learners will be issued special assessment numbers while they are at grade 3 to facilitate their evaluation which begins in grade 4.
The introduction of the special numbers is aimed at the assessment of the learners by KNEC throughout their learning period in terms of their educational performance and conduct.
KNEC also pointed out that the transfer process will be purely done online, and the headteachers will be able to access it through the KNEC portal.
“Learners not in the KNEC system at Grade 4 and 5 can be registered by both the sub-county director of education and the headteacher,” the document reads.
Under the CBC, the final mark at the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations done in grade 6 will not determine their overall performance as the complex system will involve a combination of Classroom Assessment Tests (CATs) to gauge their ability.
Each CAT done at grade 4, 5, and 6 carries 20 percent of their final attainment, meaning that it cumulatively account for 60 percent of the final score.
The remaining 40 percent entails an examination from KNEC, which is done at the end of grade 6.
