Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has tested positive for Covid-19 for a second time, the English Premier League side confirmed on Wednesday, 29th December.

This means he will miss the Premier League match against Manchester City on 1st January 2022.

Assistants Albert Stuivenberg and Steve Round will take charge at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta will miss our match against Manchester City on New Year’s Day after testing positive for Covid-19. Mikel is isolating in line with Government guidelines and we wish him well,” Arsenal said in a statement.

The Spaniard previously contracted the virus in March 2020, shortly before the pandemic forced the Premier League to shut down for more than three months.

Currently, Arteta is the third Premier League boss to have contracted the virus over the festive period. Crystal Palace head coach Patrick Vieira and Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard are also in quarantine following their positive tests.

According to BBC Sport, the Gunners defenders Calum Chambers, Cedric Soares, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles missed the 5-0 win over Norwich on 26th December after testing positive.

The Gunners were due to play Wolves on Tuesday but the game was postponed due to an outbreak in Bruno Lage’s squad.

Arsenal, who have won their past four league games, are fourth in the table, 12 points behind leaders City.
