Outspoken Gatundu South Member of Parliament (MP), Moses Kuria, has suggested changes that propose sharing of power between Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga.
In a video sent to newsrooms from Dubai, where he is currently on specialized medication after suffering burns caused by an electric blanket, the lawmaker suggestions are based on the threshold that Presidential hopefuls are required to meet after the 2022 General Elections before being declared the cogent successor of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to Kuria, the percentage should be increased from the current 50 percent plus one to over 60 percent of the total votes for Presidential candidates.
“If you do not garner 60 percent or more of the presidential vote, you have to form a government of national unity for five years,” Kuria stated.
He says that his proposal is aimed at ensuring there is a smooth transition of power from President Uhuru’s Government and the new Government formed after the 2022 polls.
“This will bring Kenya together and safeguard the country for future generations,” Kuria stated.
“I fear for our beloved country Kenya. If you want to form a government by yourself, please be ready to garner more than 60 percent.” He added.
This overture comes after a recent poll by Infotrak, which was released on December 27, 2021. Infotrak, in their results, pointed out that former premier Raila Odinga was popular countrywide at 33 percent, followed by DP Ruto at 32 percent, indicating a nip and tuck contest in the oncoming polls.
Meanwhile, Kuria addressed all contestants seeking elective seats in 2022 to be careful when making their utterances at rallies and meetings to ensure that their messages promote ethnic inclusiveness.
“To all the people who are looking for elective seats, presidential seat especially, I want to tell them Kenyans love you a lot. But Kenyans don’t love you enough to die for you, So be advised accordingly. If it’s between you and peace and the future of our children, Kenyans will choose peace and the future of our children over you. Don’t be misguided.”
