The government has called upon drivers to observe road safety as schools re-open for the third term.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 4th January, government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna noted that roads remain a matter of great concern to the government and the general public.

“We are losing many of our people on road crashes, leaving many households without a bread winner, and children orphaned.

According to the government, by end of last year (2021), the country had lost 4,579 lives through avoidable road crashes, with 16, 046 nursing injuries.

Some of those who perished were students on their way home.

“Overspeeding has been the main cause of the crashes. This is unacceptable, and we (collectively), must bring a stop to it,” said Oguna.

He urged all drivers to adhere to traffic regulations in a bid to prevent road accidents that cost innocent lives.

“As schools re-open this week, we appeal to all drivers of both public and private vehicles, to adhere to traffic rules and regulations. Drive responsibly, and let us get all our children to schools safely.”

“All travelers, including students returning back to school, are urged to speak up against reckless driving. Remember, your life is a precious gift from God. Do not trust any driver with it! Safety on the roads must be of concern to all of us.”
