Richard Momoima Onyonka, Kitutu Chache South Member of Parliament (MP), has been arrested.

Sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) nabbed the lawmaker at Kisii Town on January 11.

Reports from the DCI indicate that the MP was arrested due to utterances that he made in a political rally.

Onyonka was shepherded to Kisii County Police Headquarters before his arraignment in court to answer his charges.

It is reported that in his speech, he affirmed that they will chase away people from the Rift Valley ahead of the 2022 General Elections.

This comes after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji wrote to the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, on January 10 to probe the MP after his divisive speech.

“The alleged remarks captured in the video clip may be contrary to Article 33(2) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 62(1) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act,” read the DPP letter in part.

“You are hereby directed to undertake investigations into the aforementioned matter and submit the investigation file within seven days of the date hereof,” the DPP directed the Inspector General of Police.

Onyonka taunted the DPP to arrest him on January 10, saying that he was misunderstood.

“I hear there’s a letter written (by the DPP) to the DCI to investigate me. Even if they arrest me or not, I’m a man…,” he stated.

Onyonka becomes the second politician to be netted by DCI on grounds of making remarks that incite members of the public.

On Monday, Meru Senator Mithika Linturi was arrested over his ‘madoadoa’ remarks, made during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) rally in Eldoret, Sports Club, on January 8.
