DPP Haji orders probe on alleged hate speech by Senator Aaron Cheruiyot » Capital News

NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 11 – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered investigations into alleged inflammatory utterances made Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot last weekend during Deputy President William Ruto’s rally in Eldoret.

Haji has directed the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to commence the probe and submit a report to his office within seven days.

“The alleged remarks captured in the video clip make reference to the racial identity of an elected leader which utterances could incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination,” Haji said.

Mutyambai has also been directed to investigate Abubakar Amana of Lamu who is alleged to have made provoking ethnic remarks during on December 19 last year.

“The alleged remarks captured in the video clip refer to certain parts of Kenya belonging to certain tribes, and tribal background being a pre-condition for seeking an elective position in these areas,” Haji said adding that “the alleged utterances could incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination”.

The latest action by Haji now brings the total number of politicians who are currently being investigated for making remarks bordering on hate speech to three.

Others being investigated include Meru Senator Mithika Linturi and Kitutu Chache MP Richard Onyonka.
