Othaya Member of Parliament Gichuki Mugambi has reiterated his commitment to continue improving education standards in the constituency in a bid to enhance the reputation of the area in becoming an academic powerhouse in Kenya.

The first term lawmaker who was speaking in Mucharage primary school in Chinga ward said education has been on top of his agenda since his election in 2017 and he will continue partnerships with other stakeholders in the country to boost the growth of the sector in Othaya constituency.

“We decided to invest in education because that’s the most important asset we can give our people and they have embraced it positively in terms of making well use of available opportunities that come with our input.

“Since taking over, our performance in the entire county has risen from second last to second with our mean score hitting way above average from 235 to 276.All these milestones is attributed to interventions to save what was a collapsing sector in Othaya ” asserted Mugambi.

Musharage primary school head teacher Susan Muchemi lauded the incumbent legislator for his track record in investing much resources in education institutions in the constituency especially in boosting the infrastructure sector saying the move will enable delivery of good results during national examinations.

She further urged education stakeholders in the area to back lawmaker’s initiatives in order to help in the realization of fruits associated with education empowerment

“Condusive learning environment boosts productivity and subsequently leads to better results of our kids.Mugambi is so passionate about Education and has also been advocating for the growth of education in Othaya on the floor of the house. He has been at TSC offices several times just to push for recruitment of enough teachers in this constituency to ensure there’s no deficit to cater for the needs of pupils and students in primary and secondary schools respectively” she remarked.

The MP who is a member of both Education and Budget and Appropriations committee in parliament said he opted for prudent utilisation of resources in his expenditures to uphold ethics of integrity.

“We always build classrooms at affordable costs contrary to what used to happen before. For example one classroom takes a budget worth 1million compared to Kshs 4M in the past and this too applies to renovation works which cost approximately Kshs 400,000 per classroom from the previous 1M.This is commendable for an admnistration which seeks to avoid questions of financial impropriety ” added the soft spoken MP

The events surrounding Gichuki’s election echoed those of his mentor and predecessor, retired President Mwai Kibaki. Just before the 2002 elections, Kibaki, then a presidential candidate, was involved in a road accident while returning to Nairobi from a campaign tour of Ukambani.

Mugambi too was badly injured through an accident in July 2017 that left his constituents wondering whether he would recover in time for the final round of campaigns.

Kibaki represented Othaya constituency for nearly four decades with little opposition. Despite being in the national limelight, he was aloof to his critics, preferring to engage them with silence or the occasional well-calculated verbal jab to throw them off.
