Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i has said that the country is prepared to hold the August 2022 polls.
Matiang’i was speaking during a meeting with a multi-agency team when he said that peaceful conditions have prevailed throughout the country compared to the past where such time witnessed splinter groupings caused by political differences.
“The police have presented their reports on the preparedness of the election, and we are content we are ready,” he said.
However, the CS noted that recently, there have been four cases of violence and blamed the politicians saying that they sparked vehemence whenever they failed to deliver promises they give to the citizens. Also, he says that the politicians should be discouraged from giving handouts and bribes to the electors.
“Police officers are not responsible for mediating disputes of handouts or failed promises. Let us have decent campaigns and be responsible,”
“The endemic false promising of money to the people, bribery, failing young people and sometimes mismanaging those organisations on the ground and causing conflict remains a challenge.”
He said that the special team will be meeting on monthly basis to review the election preparations as a move to see the country conduct a peaceful and a successful General Election.
The team includes the National Police Service (NPS), Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, and chairperson of National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Samuel Kobia.
Further, Matiang’i fired a warning to politicians accused of harassing public servants and abusing them while on duty saying that they will face the full force of the law.
