Alice Wahome or Gachagua? DP Ruto Reveals Choice of Running Mate

Deputy President William Ruto on Wednesday casually introduced the man and woman who are likely to be his running mate in the 2022 presidential contest.

After delivering his speech during a rally at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, the DP invited Kandara MP Alice Wahome and her Mathira counterpart Rigathi Gachagua. He asked them to address the jubilant crowd, which crowned the first joint political event between ANC of Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula-led Ford-Kenya, and Dr. Ruto’s UDA.

The move by the DP caught many unawares and signaled that he could pick either of the two to deputise him.

Both Gachagua and Wahome have been separately drumming up support for themselves as the best choices for running mate in the ‘Hustler Nation’

In December 2021, the Kandara lawmaker said she was best suited for the position, as she has been with the loyal confidant of the DP.

“If you are asked as the Muranga’a people who the woman that has remained steadfast in support for the DP is, I know you would not have problems picking her.

“I strongly feel that Murang’a has the ability to deputise Ruto and that candidate should be a woman who is known to defend him against the huge risks of deep state intimidation,” she said.

On the other hand, Gachagua has numerously stated he is equal to the task.

“I believe I can serve this country in any capacity and I would accept any job Ruto gives me.”

Last year, the second in command, while in Mathira, hinted at naming Gachagua as his running mate.

“I want to ask you the people of Mathira, have you given me permission to move around with your son to look for votes?” he posed. The answer was in the affirmative.
