Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s wife Ida Odinga recently called on the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to close down churches that were not run by trained clerics.

Speaking during the launch of Christian Book by Archbishop Emeritus Habbakuk Abogno on January 30, Ida stated that churches were taking advantage of Kenyans by using God’s name to defraud them of their hard-earned pennies.

“We want Kenyans to subscribe to religions that are formally registered and not those whose belief systems are commodified. It is also important that we conduct training for all those who minister the word of God,” Ida remarked.

Following this development, Atheists in Kenya have declared support for Ida’s sentiments asserting that churches in Kenya have been commercialized by some greedy men in cloth.

“Some churches sell prosperity while others simply take advantage of their congregants’ ignorance. Some congregants will pay the religious leaders because they want to obtain spiritual favors.”

“There is a need to enact specific legislation to govern the religious sector in order to bring about transparency and accountability by religious leaders.” reads part of their statement.

However, when Atheists in Kenya society sent their news release to media outlets, Ida had already apologized to those affected by his remarks, withdrawing the statements and adding that preaching is a divine call to anyone, whether literate or illiterate, and churches shall never be closed.

“As a committed believer in Jesus Christ, I understand that preaching is a calling and anyone can be touched to administer the word of God. This is a fact I have appreciated for a long time, and I have sat and listened to many preachers eloquently and diligently
deliver life-changing sermons.

“I remain dedicated to promoting the growth of the church space for a better society in Kenya,” stated Ida.
