Migori Speaker arrested over office break-in to be charged Thursday

Migori County Assembly Speaker Boaz Okoth who was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly breaking into the assembly’s finance office has been released.

Police released the Speaker on a Ksh 50,000 cash bail after spending hours being grilled over the incident that happened in the wee hours of the night.

Migori County Police Boss, Mark Wanjala, told journalists that Okoth and seven others allegedly broke into the offices at around 3 a.m and made away with crucial files.

The County official was freed at 4.30 pm over health issues while the other suspects have been detained and will spend the night in police cells awaiting arraignment in court Thursday.

“We released him after complaints of sickness and poor health, the case though has been investigated and is ready for court tomorrow where Okoth and seven others will face charges of malicious damage of assembly property and theft,” Wanjala told reporters.

County Finance Officer Evans Ogutu who is helping with investigations is expected to record a statement that will establish what was taken away by the Speaker and his accomplices following reports that two computers and several files are missing.

“Ogutu was in Nairobi and he is coming to record a statement which will help in the case,” Wanjala said.

Okoth has been embroiled in leadership wrangles and has survived several attempts to eject him.

In 2020 he was arrested and charged with corruption.
