Cabinet Secretary (CS) Peter Munya of the Ministry of Agriculture has dismissed claims that he was to quit President Uhuru’s Cabinet to join Meru gubernatorial race in the upcoming 2022 polls.
While addressing a presser at Kilimo House in Nairobi on Wednesday, February 9, CS Munya confirmed that he is still in office and will not be seeking to unseat current Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi.
“I have been reflecting on my political journey and talking to my friends and supporters and looking at the current political situation. I have come to a conclusion that the best strategic decision is not to go and run for Governor in Meru. In other words, I won’t be running in the position of Governor in Meru,” Munya said.
However, Munya noted that does not keep him away from playing part in 2022 polls. He said that he is currently building his Party of National Unity (PNU) to ensure that they get notable seats in the General Elections slated for August.
“I will play a role at the national level and build the PNU party. We have been recruiting candidates, and I will make sure the party continues growing,” he stated.
Munya was the first Governor of Meru County and took office in 2013. He sought re-election in the 2017 polls but lost to Murungi. He was then appointed to head the Ministry of Agriculture after Mwangi Kiunjuri was sacked.
