Kenya Harlequin and Nondies were on Saturday, February 26, 2022, relegated from the Kenya Cup after finishing 11th and 12th respectively at the end of the regular season.
Nondies lost 13-7 to Homeboyz and picked a losing bonus but not enough to keep them up as they finished the season on 16. Homeboyz picked four to finish on 19.
Kenya Harlequin lost 24-8 to Mwamba to finish 11th on 17 points, level with Impala who beat MMUST 44-13. Impala’s goal difference(-47) bettered Kenya Harlequin’s (-69). MMUST finished 9th with Homeboyz finishing 8th.
It was the first time in history Quins and Nondies suffered relegation since its(Nondies) formation in 1923 at the New Stanley Hotel, Nairobi.
Nondies have the most titles and won the first edition on August 16, 1969, beating Impala 19-6 at RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi.
The Red Lion had won three and lost seven going to the final matchday and needed a win over the Deejayz to stay up. Nondies’ three wins were against Strathmore Leos on matchday four and back to back wins over Impala and Mwamba in the last two weeks.
Impala had been relegated before going down in 1989 when they were walloped by KCB. They were then relegated in 1993 and came back to the Kenya Cup in 1996. In the 2021/22 season, Impala beat Mwamba 31-14 and Top Fry Nakuru 29-27 with both wins coming in January.
