Who is this man Farouk Kibet? This is the question among Kenyans on social media after his unprecedented prominent role during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) national delegates conference (NDC) this afternoon.
The event took place at the Moi International Stadium in Kasarani, Nairobi.
Throughout the function, Farouk ensured nothing unplanned took prominence to hijack the agenda of the day which was endorsing his boss, Deputy President William Ruto, as the UDA presidential candidate.
Farouk, who is the DP’s personal assistant and most trusted aide, stood right behind the master of ceremony.
From time to time, he interrupted the emcee and other speakers to give them instructions.
In one of the videos seen by Litkenya.com, he told UDA chairman Johnstone Muthama how he should invite Secretary-General Veronica Maina.
“But first tell these people to keep quiet,” he shouted.
He also collided with some political leaders during the convention.
His coordination was praised and criticised in equal measures. Some people called him out for “disrespecting” elected leaders while others gave him a thumbs up for a good job.
Journalist David Makali posed: “What’s his job description in UDA or around the DP?”
Blogger Pauline Njoroge also had a question: “What has Farouk Kibet done? Seeing complains all over.”
But who is this man?
Those close to the DP describe him as “Mr Fix-it All”.
If you want to meet the second in command and you don’t know Farouk, chances of you accessing the DP are virtually non-existent. He basically calls the shots.
Farouk is a seasoned political broker who began his activities in Eldoret in the 1990s. He was a vocal Kanu youth mobiliser.
He worked with different politicians though he enjoyed staying behind the scenes. He is known to be very loyal.
Despite his proximity to power, the businessman’s education background beyond primary school is not known.
