Citizen TV was forced to cut short its live coverage of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) national delegates conference (NDC) over alleged differences with the party.
The station’s journalists were reportedly ordered out of the event and no specific reasons were provided.
Explaining the sudden development, news anchors Rashid Abdala and Lulu Hassan said the UDA’s decision came as a shock to them.
“Some are asking why we are not live at Kasarani Stadium. We understand that UDA delegates asked journalists to move out for an hour. We are sorry for the interruption,” Rashid said.
There were reporters from other stations who were also kicked out.
Some Kenyans argued that it was not right to chase away journalists while others were of the view that Citizen TV, in particular, is biased.
The station is owned by billionaire SK Macharia, a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Macharia has been accompanying the former Prime Minister in almost all his political meetings across the country.
The media mogul is also part of an exclusive club spearheading Raila’s presidential campaigns.
In December last year when Raila declared he would make a fifth stab at the presidency, Macharia insisted that his businesses are largely independent.
He asserted that his over 15 radio and TV stations under Royal Media Services (RMS) offer balanced reporting to all sides of the political divide.
However, critics claim that Raila gets more airtime and coverage as compared to UDA leader, Deputy President William Ruto who is a frontrunner in the 2022 presidential race.
