President Uhuru Kenyatta will this morning commission the newly upgraded Mathare-Korogocho Level 5 Hospital now known as Mama Margaret Kenyatta Children Hospital.

The facility which boasts of a 350-bed capacity was refurbished last year at a cost of Ksh 400 joins the list of top referral hospitals in the country.

The hospital which had stalled for years opened its doors to the public on December 14 and has been offering specialized health care services available for free or at subsidized rates.

According to Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) boss General Mohamed Badi, the hospital was upgraded to ease pressure on Kenyatta National Hospital (Level 6) and Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital (Level 5) in Eastlands, which serves over 2.1 million people.

In August 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed NMS to construct 24 hospitals in informal settlements so as to avail health services closer to the people as part of government scale dup efforts to revolutionise healthcare through the rolling out of the Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC).

Since the Jubilee administration, there has been an increase of 43 per cent in public health facilities from a stock of 4,429 facilities in 2013 to 6,342 currently.
