Newly appointed Music Copyrights Society of Kenya (MCSK) CEO Ezekiel Mutua has sent a message to all Kenyan musicians.

His message comes just a day after his appointment was made public by the MCSK board.

The former Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) boss has promised to work with all musicians to make the music industry profitable and meaningful.

“My message is simple: I will work for you and with you to make music profitable and meaningful. I will fight for you, defend your rights and put conversations about music at the front table like I did with film.

He also said that he would work together with musicians to raise the quality of music in the country and restore the glory of the industry.

“Together we shall raise the quality of Kenyan music and restore the lost glory of the industry. I am your champion. In more progressive countries musicians are among the richest and most respected people in society. It can and will happen in Kenya too,” Mutua stated.

“MCSK belongs to musicians and my brief is, therefore, to fight for your welfare. I appeal for your support as we begin the journey of reviving and repositioning this great industry.”

Despite Mutua’s promise, a section of musicians have disapproved his appointment saying that he did nothing at KFCB and appointing him to MCSK was not a good decision.

Sauti Sol members Bien Aime Baraza and Chimano were among the first to oppose Mutua’s appointment to MCSK.

“Ezekiel Mutua’s appointment is a disappointment. What did he do for film? Kenya continues to elevate mediocrity. This is just sad,” said Bien.

“Ezekiel Mutua’s appointment is such nonsense… Recycling bin inc. That’s what we are,” said Chimano.

Comedian Eric Omondi who also reacted to Mutua’s appointment said: “Hii Kenya tunasonga steps mbili Mbele Alafu Kumi Nyuma. Wembe itakua ni ile ile. Akileta unafiki tutafanya kama Will Smith.”
