The controversy surrounding the shaving of field marshal Muthoni Kirima’s decades-old dreadlocks has split Kenyans down the middle.
Former First Lady Mama Ngina did the shave in a ceremony witnessed by freedom fighters, Kikuyu elders and leaders over the weekend. They are to be preserved at the Kenya National Museum.
The big question was: Did she consent or someone used manipulative means to convince her to shed the 70-year-old hair?
She had not shaved her locks since 1952 when she took an oath to join the Mau Mau movement.
Well, the heroine has broken her silence.
She insisted that she made the decision herself and no external forces were involved.
“I also want my head to get some fresh air. There is no way they can force me to cut my hair and if they tried, I can beat them up,” she said.
Muthoni was the only woman who was earned the title “field marshal”.
During the Mau Mau war, she stayed in the forest for several years with men.
Self-proclaimed body language experts had argued that she did not look happy during and after the shave.
Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is among Kenyans who took to social media platforms to register their disappointments.
“As a political detainee I am very pained by this ritual. Did she really consent? Her dreadlocks were her legacy as a revolutionary. It reminds me of the humiliation meted out to Wangari Maathai in prison when her dreadlocks were cut off. So, where are the dreadlocks?” he wrote.
