Uhuru Narrates Snake Encounter in Bushy Kisumu Port

President Uhuru Kenyatta recalled how the National Youth Service (NYS) officers intervened and protected him after he encountered snakes in the bushy Kisumu Port.

Speaking at Lang’ata Barracks on Wednesday, April 13, the Head of State recalled that he toured the then under construction port accompanied by former Chief of Defence Forces, Gen (Rtd) Samson Mwathethe. 

The two were guided by NYS officers on where to step and pass, remembering how he saw snakes slither around.

“We kept on asking ourselves where the port was located. As we moved forward, NYS officers advised us not to proceed and exercise caution.

“The NYS officers led us through the bushes as we saw snakes jump left and right. But we can all now see the efforts of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in rehabilitating the port,” he stated much to the delight and applause from the KDF officers.

Refurbishment of the port of Kisumu cost Ksh3 billion and was coordinated by Kenya Navy, the NYS, and Kenya Railways Corporation. 

Uhuru praised the military for rebuilding the port at a cost-friendly budget, stating that it was one of the examples of how dedicated the KDF was in fighting graft and building the economy. 

The President was speaking at Lang’ata Barracks after unveiling the Ulinzi Sports Complex constructed by the KDF. 

Inside the state-of-the-art facility are an aquatic centre, an indoor tennis court and a 10,000 seater football stadium comprising a 8-lane athletic track.

“I am happy with the work that the KDF have put in and it by completing the facility in 16 months,” he appreciated.
