Celebrated Kikuyu gospel musician Sammy Boy has opened up for the time since his jailing in February this year.
He is serving his life imprisonment at the Naivasha Maximum Prison.
Sammy was charged with robbery with violence after he was found in possession of stolen goods in 2015.
Police recovered items that had been stolen in Gilgil in his house. They belonged to some whites.
Speaking to Inooro TV, the artiste narrated the his friend asked him to keep the goods for him.
“He was childhood friend and we would talk often. He told me that he had some items that he wanted me to keep for him for some time. I agreed without knowing that those things would land me in jail.
“They were quite a number of goods and I did not suspect anything. However, I was curious because I noticed there were several phones,” he said.
He recounted that his friend went into hiding after he was seized by the police, but there were other suspects arrested. Sadly, the friend died months later in a road accident along Thika Superhighway, he claims.
“I am not a thief. My friend set me up without my knowledge. I wish I knew. You should be very careful when dealing with friends,” he advised.
Asked why he was not able to successfully defend himself, the musician explained that his lawyer abandoned him halfway due to a lack of legal fees.
When he was apprehended in 2015, there were claims that some weapons were also found in his house. He denied.
However, Sammy says all is not lost as he is preparing an appeal.
“If there are people who can help me hire a good lawyer, I will be very happy. I want to put up a strong appeal in the High Court,” he said.
Before his imprisonment, the singer had released several songs that became very popular to date. They include No Ira Tu (Just Yesterday I Was Poor and today I’m blessed) and Njuiri (My hair will grow again just like the Biblical Samson).
“My songs encourage me even when I’m here in prison. I believe I will testify using them very so soon.”
However, some Kenyans were not convinced by his side of the story. They claimed that there was something he was hiding from the public.
