Jubilee Party has settled on Equity Bank Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Polycarp Igathe as it candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

NTV journalists Kennedy Muriithi and James Smart have confirmed.

It means Kenya National Commerce of Chambers and Industry (KNCCI) Richard Ngatia and businesswoman Agnes Kagure have been rejected. We could not verify whether they were consulted.

It was not immediately clear the formula Jubilee used to handpick Igathe.

This is, of course, a shocker to Ngatia and Kagure, as the corporate executive announced his candidature a few days ago. He has barely done any campaigns.

On the other hand, Kagure and Ngatia have been aggressively campaigning, though separately.

Ngatia’s billboards are littered all over the city.

However, the businessman, who is very close to some of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s friends, among them Jubilee Vice-chairman David Murathe and State House official Njee Muturi, has been adversely mentioned in the multi-billion shillings Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) scandal.

Ngatia’s company won a huge tender to supply medical equipment following the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020.

Jubilee is under the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya banner, which also brings together ODM, Wiper and more thn 20 other parties.

ODM was fronting Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi for the Nairobi top seat.

Smart hinted that Wanyonyi has shelved his ambition in favour of Igathe. It is likely Igathe, who resigned as Nairobi deputy governor in 2018, and Wanyonyi will run on a joint ticket.

Last week, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka endorsed Ngatia for Nairobi governorship. He has also proposed his ally, Philip Kaloki to be Ngatia’s running mate.

Whomever Azimio will pick, he/she will battle it out with Kenya Kwanza Alliance torchbearer Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.
