Former Equity Chief Commercial Officer Polycarp Igathe has been chosen as the Azimio La Umoja gubernatorial candidate for the position of Nairobi governor.
This comes weeks after Igathe resigned from Equity Bank. Igathe was the former Nairobi County deputy governor under the troubled tenure of Mike Sonko. Igathe was set to run the policy, administration and management of the city county, with Sonko doing the political legwork and grounding. But Sonko cut him to size after the elections and claimed that he was undermining his leadership.
Reports say that Igathe was settled upon by the Jubilee party through the intervention of President Uhuru Kenyatta. Igathe is now likely to be unveiled as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya alliance candidate.
He will be deputized by Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi.
It was not immediately clear how Igathe’s candidature would be received by former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka who one week ago endorsed businessman Richard Ngatia for the top seat. Ngatia was seeking the seat under the Jubilee party.
