Former President Kibaki’s state funeral set for Friday

State funeral for the late President Mwai Kibaki will be held on Friday 29th April 2022 at Nyayo Stadium.  

Thereafter the body of the late president will be laid to rest on 30th April 2022 in Othaya Nyeri County.

Addressing the media Saturday afternoon, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, said the President’s body will lie in state at Parliament for three days between Monday and Wednesday to allow leaders and members of public to pay their respect.

“Those in Nairobi who would like to visit the family can go to the late President Kibaki’s office in Nyari. A facility in Othaya CDF office will be set up for leaders and members of public to visit and pay their respect.” Said CS Matiang’i.

The death of the third president of Kenya, President Mwai Kibaki was officially announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta Friday afternoon at State House Nairobi.

During the announcement, President Kenyatta declared a period of national mourning from Friday until sunset on the day of his interment.

He said that the former President will be accorded a state funeral with full military honours and protocols being rendered and observed.

“In addition, the Flag of the Republic of Kenya are being shall be flown at half-mast at State House and all Kenyan Diplomatic Missions, public buildings and public grounds, all military bases, posts, and stations, on all naval vessels of the Republic of Kenya, and elsewhere throughout the entire territory of the Republic of Kenya; from today until sunset on the day of his interment.” announced President Kenyatta.

Adding that: “The President, the Deputy-President, the Chief Justice, Cabinet Secretaries, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Speaker of the Senate, Kenya’s Diplomats abroad and whosoever else is so authorized by law, shall not fly the national flag on their official motorcade from today until sunset on the day of his interment.”

The late President Kibaki was sworn in as the Third President of the Republic of Kenya on 30th December 2002. He served as Head of State and Government until 9th April 2013.
