The government has imposed a dusk-to dawn-curfew for the next 30 days in Marsabit County.

The move comes in response to increased banditry attacks in the region.

Speaking at the General Service Unit (GSU) headquarters in Nairobi, Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i said that the 6 pm to 6 am curfew will allow security agencies to deal with the illegal rise of firearms.

“With effect from 6 pm tonight, we have placed the whole of Marsabit county under curfew for 30 days. The curfew will be between 6 pm and 6 am,” Matiang’i said.

“We are moving in security resources to clean up the area. We must get all illegal firearms from that place. We will stay there until the job is done.”

CS Matiang’i also declared Kom Sub-location in Isiolo County as a disturbed area for the next 30 days adding that any movement in that area must be cleared by the security sector.

The CS called upon leaders in the region to cooperate with the government in ensuring security is restored in the affected areas.

“I ask all leaders of Marsabit to cooperate with us in this operation. We are grateful to the religious leaders in Marsabit for reaching out to the victims and the government as well,” he said

He further assured of consistent supply of relief food and water in Isiolo and Marsabit during the curfew period.
