Kanu Endorses Kalonzo as Raila’s Running Mate

The Kenya National African Union (Kanu) has endorsed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the running mate of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s running in the 9th August General Election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 5th May Kanu Chairman Gideon Moi said Kalonzo is the most suitable person to deputise Raila.

“It is our considered opinion and strongly believes that H.E Hon Stephen Kalonzo fits the bill and is the most suitable individual to deputise H.E Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga,” Moi wrote in a letter to Azimio Deputy President Selection Panel.

“It is our sincere hope that this panel will consider and find him appropriate for the position of Deputy President and consequently recommend his selection as such.”

Besides Kanu, Cyrus Jirongo’s United Democratic Party (UDP) also threw its weight behind Kalonzo’s candidacy.

“The United Democratic Party hereby proposes and submits the name of H.E Hon Stephen Kalonzo as its preferred candidate for the position of Deputy President in the forthcoming 2022 General Elections,” UDP secretary-general Bernard Wachie Wafukho wrote to the advisory panel.

Meanwhile, the ruling Jubilee Party endorsed former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth and Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege for the deputy president position.

Azimio parties had until yesterday to submit names of proposed running mates to the 7-member panel.

Raila will make the final choice before the 16th May deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
