Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has dismissed Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s plans to relocate the schools within Kisumu’s Central Business District (CBD).

Speaking at Kisumu Girls on Saturday, 7th May CS Magoha said that the schools were ‘safe’ wherever they were and warned against relocation.

“As we are now, every Kenyan school is safe as you can imagine where it is. If there is an issue and it comes to the ministry we shall take it to public participation. For example, if you want to relocate a school anywhere else, you must ask the people there. Our government is not a dictatorial one.”

Governor Nyong’o had earlier this week stated this week that schools within the CBD should be moved away to pave way for the construction of Economic and Integrated business areas to boost economic activities on the lakeside.

”Considering the value of the place, that land needs to be useful. We need to construct an integrated urban center rather than schools,” said Nyong’o.

Nyong’o suggested that the schools would be taken to areas where they share facilities to prevent excessive use of government land.

“Each school has a field, a swimming pool and other amenities that have occupied land. Why don’t we take them to an area where schools share amenities? We don’t need to have a field for each school in a town,” Nyong’o said.

The institutions that were to be relocated include Kisumu Boys, Kisumu Girl’s High School and Manyatta Arabs School.

Under the new Kisumu City’s plan, the Jua Kali Market and the main Kisumu bus terminus are set to be relocated. The Kisumu County Referral Hospital, is set to be merged with the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
