Chief Justice Martha Koome has urged new advocates admitted to the Roll of Advocates to be ethical in their dealings with clients.
Speaking while presiding over the admission to the Roll of Advocates of 302 new advocates at the Supreme Court grounds, Koome said, “The cancer of corruption has posed a challenge to probity and integrity in the workings of our public institutions. Lapse in ethics and integrity, could see you struck of the Roll of Advocates that you have signed today.”
She said as Lawyers they now have a role to play in the realization of the Constitution’s overarching vision for social transformation and in the Judiciary’s quest to deepen access to justice.
“This vision for the Judiciary is marked by a quest to deepen access to justice and improve the performance of our system of justice,” Koome said.
The CJ highlighted the significance of passing the 20,000+ mark of the number of Advocates admitted to the Roll of Advocates saying it’s a clear testimony that the Kenyan legal profession has grown by leaps and bounds over the years.
“My appeal is that you should join our movement of deepening access to justice. We are establishing court stations throughout the country. A High Court station in each county and a Magistrate’s court station in each sub-county. Some counties and sub-counties located in historically marginalized areas still do not have a significant presence of Advocates. The residents of such areas need your services,” She said.
