Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is said to have a backup plan if he doesn’t get the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party’s running mate seat.

According to Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr, the backup plan is Kalonzo breaking ties with the Odinga-led coalition and running for president on his own.

Wiper is said to have gathered 2,000 signatures across 24 counties as part of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) requirements for Kalonzo’s bid as an independent candidate.

The party is expected to finish signature collection on Friday, after which Kalonzo’s decision would be implemented by the Wiper’s National Management Council.

In advance of Kalonzo’s move, the council unanimously endorsed the former Vice President’s State House bid on Monday.

“We promised to begin collecting signatures immediately and finish by Thursday; we are planning ahead. We can’t keep pleading forever. Senator Kilonzo Jr. We are ahead of the game,” he told the Standard.

Despite the fact that the scenario does not name Kalonzo’s preferred running mate, the Makueni Senator is confident that Wiper would find a qualified candidate by the IEBC’s May 16 deadline.

Other Wiper officials, including Kilonzo Jr, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, and Makueni MP Dan Maanzo, have been urging Kalonzo to break relations with Odinga and run for the country’s top seat himself in recent weeks.

A panel tasked to select a running mate has forwarded the names of Kalonzo, Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya for consideration.

However, the Noah Wekesa-led seven-member committee has placed Karua ahead of Kalonzo.
