A Kenyan nurse working at the Marsabit County Referral Hospital has been named the winner of a prestigious award with a $250,000 (Ksh29M) prize. Her name is Anna Qabale Duba.

At an award ceremony held at Atlantis The Palm in Dubai, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, congratulated the winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.

On April 26, the top ten finalists for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award were revealed.

The winner was determined by a public vote, followed by the Grand Jury’s final judgment. A monetary prize was also given to the other nine finalists.

Anna Qabale Duba was first graduate in her village and the family’s only educated child. She chose education because she recognized that illiteracy hindered people’s ability to learn new skills and change harmful cultural norms.

She used her power to advocate in her community for gender equality and education. She built a school in her village through the Qabale Duba Foundation, where children could study in the morning and adults could study in the afternoon. Over 150 children and 100 adults are currently enrolled in the community literacy program.

“I feel extremely happy and privileged to receive this prestigious award,” said nurse Anna Qabale Duba. “I knew I wanted to apply for the award as soon as I heard about it because it gives nurses from all over the world a chance to be recognized. It is a privilege to be recognized by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

“I am grateful to the jury members and Aster DM Healthcare for giving me the opportunity to share my story.”

“Heartiest congratulations to Anna Qabale Duba from Kenya for being the recipient of the first-ever Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award,” stated Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman and Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare. Her commitment to the healthcare community and the area of nursing has been outstanding, and we really hope that her story continues to inspire others.”

Dida Jirma Bulle of Kenya, Francis Michael Fernando of the United Kingdom, Jasmine Mohammed Sharaf of the United Arab Emirates, Julia Dorothy Downing of the United Kingdom, Lincy Padicala Joseph of India, Manju Dhandapani of India, Matthew James Ball of Australia, Rachel Abraham Joseph of the United States, and Wais Mohammad Qarani of Afghanistan were among the other nine finalists.
