Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has overcome many odds to where he is today.
He is the first MP to be elected while in wheelchair.
Today we will not dwell much on his political career.
Let’s understand how he found himself in a wheelchair.
Tim was ambushed by armed carjackers while driving home one evening after dropping off his cousin in Ngara.
Tim obliged and alighted after the thieves ordered him out of his car.
The carjackers got inside his car, but not before one of them shot him in the back and fled, leaving him for the dead.
He was rushed to the Agha Khan Hospital, where he was treated and told that he might never walk again.
The young lawyer had suffered a severe spinal cord injury that would render him paralyzed for the rest of his life.
Tim describes how returning to work at his brother’s firm presented him with his first obstacle as a disabled person.
Tim explained how his new life as a paralyzed person made him resentful of himself and others.
Tim and his family traveled to Brussels for specialized therapy and rehabilitation, which cost them Sh. 10 million at the time.
Wanyonyi later returned and established Tim Wanyonyi & Co. Advocates, his own firm.
“My brother (Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula) was anxious about me starting my own practice, but he subsequently discovered I was doing well.”
