Nairobi Expressway now open to public – Kenya Satellite News Network

The public can now use the 27-kilometer Nairobi Expressway.

On Saturday, May 14, motorists were allowed to use the road, which is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s signature project.

However, the opening is temporary and will enable the road’s users and the government to identify any flaws that need to be sorted.

According to Transport CS Macharia, 11,000 thousand vehicles have registered to use the route so far, with roughly 7000 registering to use the electronic toll collecting system.

“The expressway is going to help decongest the city, we are excited to launch it this morning,” He remarked.

The CS also stated that the government plans to reconstruct the old Mombasa road at a cost of Ksh9 billion, which will include a BRT line.

The launch of the Nairobi Expressway has been anticipated for months by motorists eager to traverse the 27.1-kilometer route.

The Ksh88 billion elevated expressway is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion, particularly along the popular Mombasa Road, and connect Westlands to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Motorists will be required to register for access to the Manual Toll Card (MTC) and Electronic Toll Card (ETC) as an alternative to paying with cash. Mobile money payments are currently not applicable.
